Chris Froome storms to the yellow jersey

Chris Froome stuns the world with descent off the Col de Peyresourde

Britain’s Chris Froome of Team Sky stunned the rest of the Tour de France (and pretty much the entire cycle race watching public) yesterday. The reason? A stunning descent off the Col de Peyresourde on Stage 7 of the 2016 edition of the Tour de France. Leaving the chasing pack dithering over what to do to respond (which turned out to be too little and too late) Froome shot off down the descent to Bagneres-De-Luchon. Employing a rather death defying aero tuck in, Froome could often be seen sitting on the crossbar rather than the saddle. Yet he still managed to pedal furiously at speeds up to 90 km/h. This is not a technique you’ll be finding the Criterium Cycles team replicating any time soon. However, it was certainly dramatic and fun to watch on the telly.

Froome goes into Stage 8 from Vielha Val d’Aran – Andorra Arcalis with a 16 second lead over second place and 23 seconds over his most likely rival for the title, Nairo Quintana of Movistar. The 2016 Tour de France is well and truly game on.
